A Brief History of Lilburn Christian Church

In May 1972, five families began meeting in their homes to pray, study and plan for a new congregation in the Lilburn area.  Lilburn Christian Church held its first worship service in the band room at Berkmar High School on July 30, 1972.  About 75 people were present for that service, and 22 of them made the decision to become members of the new congregation.

The new congregation purchased four acres of property at its present location on Arcado Road in March 1974.  The first building (now the chapel/youth building) was occupied in September 1977 and served as the main sanctuary for the next 21 years.

A Family Life Center was built and occupied in February 1985.

In 1989, a two-story classroom wing was added to the Family Life Center.

An additional three acres of property adjacent to the existing four acres was purchased in October 1991.  This purchase allowed the congregation to visualize a worship facility to accommodate the entire congregation in a single worship service and also to provide for future growth.  After much prayer and commitment, work on the new sanctuary was begun in April 1997, and the facility was occupied in January 1998.

Lilburn Christian Church has continually and prayerfully searched for opportunities to support new congregations.  In August 1996, the Lord led the congregation to purchase 11 acres of land in the fast-growing northern part of Gwinnett County at a very attractive price.  About six months after this purchase, plans for the Mall of Georgia construction was made public – the Lord is good!  On April 17, 2005, after meeting in a nearby church and elementary school, a building was occupied on that property.

When the church began in 1972, various area ministers and professors from Atlanta Christian College did the preaching.  Bob Shaw, the first full-time Minister was called in July 1973.  He served until November 1975.  In March 1976 Jerry Scarbrough was called and served until October 1982.  Clark Cregger was the third Senior Minister of the church, serving 26 years from 1983 until Feb., 2009.  In March, 2009, Tony Dyer was called to be the Senior Minister and is currently serving our congregation.

Presently, there are three full-time ministers on staff:  a Senior Minister, a Youth Minister and a Music Minister.  There is one part-time Children's Director and two secretaries: a Financial Secretary and an Adminstrative Secretary.  The staff works together for cohesive programs and congregational unity.

The congregation continues to serve the local and world community.  Throughout the history of this church, local and international missions have been an important part of our ministry.
